Old Rochester boys basketball takes ninth straight win against Fairhaven

MATTAPOISETT — Tuesday, Feb. 20 was a good night for the Old Rochester Regional High School boys basketball team.

The team secured its ninth straight win, beating Fairhaven 70-52, took home the South Coast Conference Blue Division Title and set itself up with strong momentum moving into the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association Division three tournament.

Tuesday’s win comes after a nine-win streak that began in mid January. The Bulldogs finished the South Coast Conference 12-1, said Old Rochester Head Basketball Coach Steve Carvalho, and are entering the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association tournament ranked fourth in division three.

“I’m happy with the way the kids played, I’m real proud,” said Carvalho. “They won their last nine in a row after they took a real beating in here against Wareham.”

Old Rochester’s last loss was against the Wareham Vikings, 90-47 on Thursday, Jan. 18.

At Tuesday’s game, the Bulldogs “got out early [with] some tempo we like,” said Carvalho, noting that they were able to pit “big guys going up [against] big guys.”

Carvalho added that the Fairhaven team “played tough.”

“They had their backs against the wall, they’re fighting to get in the [MIAA] tournament,” he said.

Now with the Bulldogs looking ahead to the MIAA tournament, Carvalho said “all the teams are good” but even going up against strong teams from across the state, the Bulldogs are “going to make sure that we take care of business.”

“When we have a home game … we’re certainly looking to fill this place [and] play some exciting basketball,” said Carvalho. “We’re out to make a deep run I hope [but] it’s not going to be easy, division three is a lot of good basketball.”
