Mattapoisett runners to compete in 2024 Boston Marathon

Apr 14, 2024

The 2024 Boston Marathon will have some representation from the Tri-Town, namely Mattapoisett.

The 128th edition of the famed 26.2-mile race from Hopkinton to Boylston Street at Copley Square is Patriots' Day, Monday, April 15.

A trio of runners out of Mattapoisett registered as entrants in the marathon.

The 2024 race will mark Bethany Couto’s 17th run of the Boston Marathon. Couto, 38, has ran the marathon since she was a senior in college.

She completed last year’s marathon with a time of 4:07:29.

“I’d like to try to run it every year and keep my streak alive if I can,” Couto said.

For the first time, Couto will run the Boston Marathon with a charity. She will be one of four race participants running for the ReMARCable Foundation.

The foundation was created by Boston Marathon bombing survivor Marc Fucarile to provide support to the mobility impaired community.

“That’ll make it special,” Couto said.

Jeffrey Short, 51, is also registered as running out of Mattapoisett. In 2013, he finished the marathon with a time of 3:55:54.

Short could not be reached for comment.

Karen Coucci, 60, registered but will not end up competing in the 2024 race. She finished last year’s race with a time of 4:03:49.

It was her 10th year of qualifying, Coucci said.

“Just not ready this year,” she said.
