Elizabeth “Betty” (DaSilva) Mendes, 94

CANTON – Elizabeth “Betty” (DaSilva) Mendes, 94, of Canton, passed away on Dec. 29, 2023, at Mass General Hospital, Boston.  She was the wife of Manuel “Big Boy” Mendes, Jr. and the daughter of the late Henrique and Laura (Barros) DaSilva.

She was born and raised in Marion and lived in Canton for 73 years.

Betty worked in the kitchen at Eastwood of Dedham Nursing Home for many years before retiring.

She was a loyal fan of the N.E. Patriots and was quoted in Darryl Stingley’s book.  She was the “Home away from Home” for many players. She was a lifetime member of the New England Rose Society and recruited many members and was an active fundraiser.  She received the “Outstanding Service Award with Bronze and Silver Medal” for 30 years with the society. She was an avid traveler from N.E. to Europe and taking cruises.  Her favorite destinations were Italy and Hawaii.  She was admired for her fashion statement and sense of style.  Most of all she enjoyed good music, dancing, family gatherings and the Cape Verdean Festival. Betty was a social butterfly, hosting and attending many different events.

Survivors include her husband of 73 years, Manuel “Big Boy” Mendes, Jr. of Canton; 2 daughters, Lisa Salamone Sherman of Milford and Lynne Mendes of Boston; a brother, Harry DaSilva of Marion; a sister, Shirley Downing of North Dartmouth; 9 grandchildren, Scott, Cristina, Jason, Oscar, Eddie, Connie, Melissa, Bruce, Rachel, and Selena; many great grandchildren, nephews, nieces and close family and friends. She was the mother of the late Bruce A. Mendes and Dennis M. Mendes and sister of the late Henry DaSilva, Jr., Lillian Corbett, Dorothy Coleman, Edward Silva and Richard DaSilva.

Visiting hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, January 8, 2024, at Chapman Funerals & Cremations – WAREHAM, 2599 Cranberry Hwy., Wareham.

Her funeral will be held at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 9, 2024, from Chapman Funerals & Cremations – WAREHAM, followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00 a.m. in St. Patrick’s Church, 94 High St., Wareham. Burial will follow in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Wareham.
