MATTAPOISETT – Parts of Mattapoisett waters were closed to shellfishing on Feb. 28 until further notice by the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries.

The affected shellfish growing areas are BB10 through BB23 in Mattapoisett, Fairhaven, New Bedford and Dartmouth. 

The digging, harvesting or collecting of shellfish or attempts to do so, except for bay scallops harvested for the adductor muscle, and the possession of shellfish from the impacted portion of Buzzards Bay is prohibited. 

“These shellfish growing areas shall remain in the ‘Closed to Shellfishing’ status until examined by the Division and notification is made that the areas have been placed in the open status,” a Division of Marine Fisheries notice said.

The reason for the closure notice was not stated.
