MATTAPOISETT – The Mattapoisett Museum will host a “rollicking” program of Celtic music led by local musicians Mark Roberts and Benedict Gagliardi on Saturday, March 16 from 4 to 5:30 p.m.

The program will feature traditional instrumental music, mostly Irish, with “other widely flung musical traditions thrown in,” according to a Mattapoisett Museum press release.

Roberts, a Mattapoisett native, has been in multiple “groundbreaking” traditional music bands, including the Red Clay Ramblers, Touchstone, the Sevens, the Clayfoot Strutters and Childsplay. His flute and pennywhistle are featured in the 1994 film “The Secret of Roan Inish,” according to the Mattapoisett Museum. Roberts primarily plays the flute and banjo, in addition to guitar, bouzouki and percussion.

Rhode Island-based musician and folksinger Gagliardi plays traditional works, accompanying songs on Anglo concertina, harmonica and tenor guitar. Gagliardi is “particularly fond of digging through old archives and tune books for unusual material,” according to a press release.

“He leads social singing events and supports community music in the Providence area and is locally recognized as a strong tradition-bearer in his generation,” a press release said.

Attendees are encouraged to bring their own instruments to join in an Irish jam session at the end of the program.
